Project History
The Bronx Latino History Project is a research, programmatic, and oral history project begun by the Society in 2009 with the aim of documenting the experiences and histories of Latino populations in The Bronx. Over the first decade of its existence the project focused on producing educational programming and exhibits at the Museum of Bronx History. Dr. Steven Payne, the librarian and archivist who started working at the Society in January 2020, commenced the oral history recording portion of the project in May 2021.
The finding aid currently contains documents generated only during the first decade of The Bronx Latino History Project. None of the oral histories are listed below yet, as they will eventually be available in a digital repository through this site.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection currently comprises a small amount of photographs and documents sought by the Society in the early years of the Bronx Latino History Project, though it will soon include a growing number of recordings and transcripts of oral histories. Before 2020, archival material from existing collections, like the Elias Karmon Papers, was erroneously inserted into this collection. Such material has been removed and reinserted into the appropriate collection.
Provenance
The Bronx Latino History Project were generated by staff members of The Bronx County Historical Society in 2009.
